Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid-Match Review:
Super Copa De Espana final had everything in the game except the goals. Real Madrid won 2019-20 Supercopa de Espana after a difficult final with arch rivals Atletico Madrid. Both sides had great chances to score in normal time and extra-time, but Madrid were the better side by an inch. Atletico might mourn on Valverde’s misanthropic challenge to stop Morata winning it for Atletico later. The match lacked composure from both sides and the match resulted in a draw after 120 minutes. Then it came to penalty kicks.
Madrid took the first penalty. Carvajal stepped up and smashed the ball that went past Oblak with no problems as 1-0 Madrid. Saul stepped forward and sent Courtois the wrong way, but his shot bounced back off the left-hand post and out keeping it as 1-0. Rodrygo fired the ball into the top right corner. Oblak had no chance of catching it and made 2-0. Thomas fired straight at Courtois and Madrid’s keeper made the stop with his hand with 2-0 score line.
Modric stepped up and shoot the ball to the left of Oblak. Atletico ha to score to stay in that then. Trippier kept himself cool and slotted ball past Courtois to make 3-1. In the end?, Ramos fired the football home and runs off with 4-1. He was handed the Supercopa de Espana to Real Madrid.
We lifted the Supercopa as the trophy presentation commenced. This victory will prove a mighty boost to us in La Liga and the Champions League as well. Atletico might disappointed after this match. Madrid are one of the toughest sides to beat in Europe and can beat the very best on their day.
Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid-Tactical Analysis:
Zidane went with 5 midfielders against Valencia in semi final and here went again with 5 midfielders. The teams looked impressive against Valencia because Valencia sat deep and did not apply pressure on Casemiro and Toni Kroos. Valencia imposed counter pressing against Madrid and team like Madrid with good positioning and always regain possession constantly. Diego Simeone knew it and did not does this mistake that Valencia did.
Real Madrid five midfielders formula could not counter press Atletico if they could keep the Madrid players going into final third. So they pressed high on us . They exerted huge amount of pressure on us and took two chances from it. Atletico press at us was losing at times as they did not take ample chances on open positioning between the lines of Casemiro and Isco in the deep.Madrid enjoyed a bit of possession in the first half and in some part of second half. Modric after reading the game started to move into half spaces which gave our team better options.
In the second half, Jovic positioning on the offensive lines is much better. The entry of Rodrygo in place of Isco changed the dynamics. The difference between the Isco and Rodrygo is Isco always drop himself deep and take the ball off the foot of a ball carrier and Rodrygo always related to opposite penalty area. It was his through ball which led Valverde missing a calculated goal from pass of Jovic. Rodrygo was also a good ball-carrier in transition.
It was still hard to find space between the lines. Fede Valverde, who had a few good moments, a constant source of threat. He may have had too much responsibility to create plays as a right winger when Saul, Lodi, and Joao Felix defended that flank well.
In the defensive manner, Real Madrid were vulnerable in the left half-space between Mendy and Ramos. Angel Correa was a constant threat and caused problems with his movement there, and Morata had one of the best chances in the game sneaking into that slot in the second half. Courtois came to the rescue.
In the extra time, Real Madrid had some sporadic spells of possession, but mostly U-shaped, and shots from long distance which didn’t test Oblak. However, the penalty-shootout was completely dominated by Real Madrid. Courtois saved one penalty in the shootout.
Thibaut Courtois started the match. He was one of the most agile player on the field. The match took to the penalties and Courtois emerged as a winner from it. The player which has improved the most is Thibaut Courtois. From a villain in La Decima to unsung hero in Real Madrid, his journey has everything in the luggage i.e. lapses, shortcoming, out of form, in form, rise and fall every thing. Now, he has settle himself at Madrid and gained the confidence of his fan base.
In the heart of defense, Varane and Sergio Ramos started in the final. Ramos presence in the field bring a lot of control and better positioning in the defense. His leadership played a great role in high intensity matches like a Super Copa final. He was impressive in keeping Morata and Jao Felix from the pitch. On the other hand, his counterpart Raphael Varane also did his job well. His pace against Felix and other players prevented in diminishing the counter attacks at the first instant.
On the flanks, Carvajal and Mendy played in the full back positions. The passing ability of Carvajal improved after every match he played for Real Madrid. He has been the core in the defense of Real Madrid since his arrival from the Bayern Leverkusen. He assisted 5 goals this season. Carvajal had almost 97 percent of pass completion. Ferland Mendy played the game as a Left Back. He was rock solid in the defense. His work rate was also very good defensively and offensively.
Zidane opted five midfielders. Kroos and Casemiro dropped deep themselves at the back. While Isco dropped on the left side and Valverde covered the right part of the pitch with Carvajal at his support from the back. Modric covers two third area of the pitch in dropping himself back and coming in the centre offensively between the lines. Casemiro was great in his role. He settle himself between the two centre backs.
Isco scored against Valencia in the last match. He was playing in the free role. He provided extra cushion in the midfield that Kroos and Casemiro not to think about more offensive work rate. As, Modric and Valverde is already there to create chances. However, Kroos scored some few shots from the left flank outside from the box which was out of the park. Madrid has now arguably the best midfield in the World. Valverde was the best player for in the match.
The only attacker played in the first line up was Luka Jovic. He could not score in the match. Luka Jovic did not impress in the first half. Although his positioning in the attack is much better and made noticeable difference. Mariano Diaz came lately in the match. He was average and did not impressed as much as little opportunities was given to him. Rodrygo came as a replacement of Isco. Rodrygo generated little ripples in the attack but not ineffective. Although , he scored a goal in the penalty shootout. In the extra time, Vinicius Jr. replaced Kroos but Marcos Llorente kept himself in his radar quite well.
Best Performance of the Match:
One day when we all will sit back and recall this moment that in the Super Cup Final we were up against our arch rivals. Tension was spilled all over the place. Morata kept running with the ball with one on one with Courtois and Valverde was chasing him. Valverde didn’t have any other option other than to stop him, he did not overthink and made a tackle. Few minutes later, his team lifted up the Spanish Super Cup. He won the Player of the Match award. It’s rare in football that you earn a red card, win the MVP award for particularly that tackle, and your team wins the Trophy.
I think this victory will enhance the team confidence in the coming season. Madrid step up to lift the Supercopa! We may well be lifting bigger trophies coming at the end of the season.
