“Football fans from the world except for Messi, Argentina, and Barcelona Fanboys, are not convinced about Lionel Messi winning the Ballon d’Or 2019. Football awards are given on the basis of performance. Yes, Messi had a good season but not better the Van Dijk, Allison, Mane, and Ronaldo. The prestige of the award has been diminished and dented.”
History of Ballon d’Or:
Gabriel Hanot is the first name that comes in our mind when giving awards to players on their performances. From 1956 to 2006, Sports Journalists used to decide the Ballon D’or winner with a fair voting process. In 2007, France Football included Coaches and Captains in the pool to vote for the players. Until 1995, only European players were eligible for this prestigious award. However, after 1995, it was decided that any player from any region playing in European Leagues will be eligible for Ballon D’or. In 2007, It became a global prize for all professional players around the world.
Ballon D’or is the most prestigious and oldest award in football history. France football awards Ballon D’or every year to the best player in a calendar year. In 2010, Fifa and France Football agreed on a collaboration for this award and named it Fifa Ballon D’or. In 2016, the agreement ended and both organizations reverted to their separate annual award.
International awards are always an honor to win for players. They are very prestigious for the fans around the World. These awards always have a huge attraction for fair judgment and merit. Alternatively, few events became irrelevant when the ideal players lifted the awards on numerous occasions.FIFA and Ballon d’Or are the most prestigious award to all the players and fans because of fairness in judgment and presenting the award to the rightful players.
Ballon D’or 2019:
Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or 2019. As much Barca fans and are happy about this decision, Ballon D’or failed to convince the neutral fans. Without a doubt, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the best players of this generation. But If we consider Messi’s last season performance on merit, Messi did not deserve to win Fifa best player award and Ballon D’or. Awards are given to winners, not to the chokers who choke under pressure.
Coming to the National team, Messi always failed to perform in Argentina colors especially when it mattered the most. He failed miserably in Copa America where he was supposed to deliver. Messi forgot Argentina’s history of wrongdoings and ended up blaming the Officials about cheating.
In the club, Messi failed with Barcelona in the 2018/19 season as well. He only won Laliga which is not enough for getting this award. He choked in Champions League against Liverpool at Anfield where Catalans were knocked out of the tournament. Messi’s conquest of winning the Champions League became a dream after the departure of Neymar. He could not have won the Champions League at the start of this decade without Iniesta and Xavi. Lionel Messi has scored just two goals with zero assist in the knockout stages of Champions League since 2015/16. He participated in three global events within this period and remained a big flop. He does not even come close to Van Dijk, Ronaldo, and Allison Becker.
Allison has won the Champions League, Copa America, and also finished second in the Premier League. Moreover, he won the best goalkeeper award on all forums including UEFA, FIFA, and Ballon D’or (Yachine Trophy). Surprisingly, France Football did not even consider him in the top five for this award. This award has no respect for goalkeepers. A good example is the 2013-14 season where Manuel Nuer deserved it more than Cristiano Ronaldo. Similarly, Iker Casillas could have been the best contender but did not get that award because goalkeepers are not even considered.
Cristiano Ronaldo was the winner of the Italian League (Serie A) and UEFA Nations League. He won titles for both the club and country. In 2018, Cristiano scored 49 goals, which is more than Messi’s 45 in 2019, with a better ratio (0.94 to 0.85). Cristiano also scored 15 goals in the Champions League 2018, more than Messi’s 12 goals in 2019.
In UEFA Nations League, he scored and helped his team to win the title. In 2019, Cristiano has more goals from Club and country than Lionel Messi who failed in Copa America. The simple fact is that Ronaldo didn’t get Ballon D’or in 2018 after doing more than Lionel Messi in 2019.
Virgil van Dijk:
In the end, Virgil van Dijk went all the season without getting dibbled passed by any player. He literally neutralized and pocketed Lionel Messi at Anfield. In the premiere league whole season, there was hardly anyone who could pose a challenge to Van Dijk’s solid defense.
Van Dink provided crucial assists and also scored goals whenever his team needed it. He ended the season as the winner of the Champions League and runner-up at the UEFA Nations League. He is the highest-ranked defender since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006 and the highest-ranked Premier League player since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008. France Football simply robbed Van Dijk of his award. To be honest, Lionel Messi didn’t even deserve to be in the top 3 candidates for Ballon D’or.
If anyone deserved to win the Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best Player Award 2019, it’s none other than Virgil van Dijk. Anyways, guys, this is it for today. Do you think Messi deserved it?
