Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid Match Review:
The match started in a high electrifying environment in Wanda Metropolitano stadium. Zidane opted 4-3-3 formation against Atletico’s 4-4-2. Real Madrid was a little shaky in the start but after some time on the pitch, the defenders felt their feet on the ground. Zidane made a drastic change to play Valverde in the midfield and his decision drew good benefits for the sake of the team. Valverde did a tremendous job between the center lines and made good recoveries in the line of attack likewise. Partey was equally as good in the match.
Real Madrid dominated 56% of the possession but it merely was not as much to affect the game. There were a couple of chances from both sides. Atletico Madrid kept their defense tighter and got support from their midfielders. They put up a great defensive show. On the other hand, Real Madrid succeeded in isolating Jao Felix. The in-match adjustments of Zidane could not help Madrid to put the ball in the net.
The only positive thing from the game is the performance of Valverde in the midfield and Nacho in the defense. The match caught fire when Sergio Ramos had arguments with the linesman and for it, he could miss the next few matches. Eden Hazard has had a slow start in Real Madrid and in every match he still has to prove that he is a galactico.
Zidane opted Courtois on number 1 position instead of Areola who also was good against Osasuna. Courtois was a little nervous in the game but kept a clean sheet. He was not that good as Oblak but lucky we did not concede any goal.
Zidane set experienced duo of Varane and Ramos for defensive cover. Ramos has been the most reliable man on the pitch for some years. He completed 60 passes out of 63. He had little conversations with linesman and Simeone in the moment of heat in the match. On the other end, Varane mixed with Ramos very well and defended well against Felix.
Dani Carvajal was back after taking rest in the last match. He did good work on the right flank and made two successful tackles against the opposition. On the left flank Nacho kept the things tighter with 93% passing accuracy, managed well himself with the midfield, and showed his versatility.
Zidane started Kroos, Valverde, and Casemiro in the center of the park. Kroos was undoubtedly the best player with 97% passing accuracy. He also had a good shot on target but Oblak saw it coming and raised to the occasion to stop it. Casemiro played this match at his full potential. He remarkably anchored the opposition attacks and helped the lads up front.
Valverde played in the first team for the first time this season and it went well for the Los Blancos. His passing accuracy was 94% but he committed a few mistakes here and there. Luka Modric came on as a Valverde’s substitution and we instantly gained control of the ball. Things would have been different if the aging magician had played from the start. James Rodriguez emerged onto the field after replacing Hazard and did a few things as well.
Starting with Benzema, he lost his venom on the field on the match day. It was as if he was lost in the arena on a few occasions. He clearly missed a header denied by hands of the goalkeeper. Gareth Bale being with pace and agility all over the pitch but he was ineffective in the sense of scoring. Eden Hazard did show some glimpses of his potential but could deliver what the fans want. He will have to face criticism on it in the coming days.
His versatility in the defensive line is so deep that he can fit in any role. He has always been a man of Madrid defensive crises. In the absence of Marcelo and Mendy, he equally performed his role and keep the left flank busy by the hindrance of opposite attack. Nacho was equally good in passing with the midfield and his good rate in attack was also very impressive.
He is undoubtedly the best midfielder of in the recent era. The german sniper completed almost 97% of passing and with his out of the box on target shots, he becomes very lethal in the midfield. His defensive pressing was also good against the Atletico’s line of attack. Combined with Casemiro he is the player who played more minutes than any other player in this season.
Valverde made his first start for Real Madrid this season and showed his defensive ability and box to box midfield skills. Although he just played 65 minutes, he made an impact. He performed his role well in combining with attacks and back in the defense until the veteran Modric took his place.
